How to invite friends to NON-private matches on call of duty 4 PS3?

just wondering, please help
How to invite friends to NON-private matches on call of duty 4 PS3?
When you are in the lobby/waiting screen with the countdown and other players. Send your friend an invite by going to the party invites tab then they must be online and playing call of duty 4. If they are click there name and it will invite. If they are off line it wont work. Also you can do it while in game by pausing and choosing invite friends. Although sometimes this doesn't work because the lobby is full so try to get them in before lots of people start joining the game.
